Delta-9: Barely Legal

Cannabis has come a long way in recent years. There was a dark age for cannabis in America, for 59 long years it was completely illegal. When California legalized marijuana for medical use in 1996, a cascade of legislations occurred and the science of cannabis expanded exponentially. Although marijuana is not yet federally legal, the 2018 Farm Bill opened the floodgates for research into many cannabinoids previously overlooked and now has circled back around to the most well known cannabinoid, delta 9 THC. The concentration of Delta 9 THC in cannabis determines whether the product is considered hemp or marijuana. The Farm Bill loosened the strict regulations on hemp which in turn allowed states where marijuana is not legal to join the hemp revolution and start growing and selling hemp products, as well as exploring within the boundaries of what the Farm Bill allows. This is how Delta 8 THC, the closest relative to Delta 9 THC gained popularity, as well as the increased prominence of many exotic cannabinoids like THCP* and THCV*. So how does Delta 9 THC fit into the picture of hemp without crossing the line?

The Farm Bill states that the legal limit of delta 9 THC is 0.3% of the dried weight of a product. So if Delta 9 THC makes up less than 0.3% of a product, whether it be flower, an edible or an oil, it is a hemp product and is compliant with the Farm Bill. In flower form, that’s not much compared to the average 15%-25% THC found in marijuana. However, edibles are a different story. If one gummy weighs a gram, that allows up to 3mg of delta 9 THC per gummy. If a gummy weighs 4 grams, that would allow up to 12 mg of delta 9 THC per gummy. This allows Alpine Dispensary to offer a product that is Farm Bill compliant but still compares to a product you would find in a green state.Typically, marijuana dispensaries carry 5 mg or 10 mg THC gummies and many dispensaries also offer equal ratio CBD:THC edibles, usually ranging from 2.5mg of each to 10mg of CBD and THC. Thanks to the Farm Bill, Alpine Dispensary can now produce similar edibles that are compliant but provide familiar effects. Depending on your experience and desired outcome, there are a range of dosing options.

At Alpine Dispensary, you will often hear our budtenders suggesting people start low and go slow trying a new edible option because you never know how a product will affect you until you try it. We recently launched a new product, an equal ratio Delta 9 THC:CBD (broad spectrum) gummy. These gummies contain 10 mg of each active ingredient. They are vegan friendly and come in an assortment of blue raspberry, fig, green apple and strawberry flavors. One is going to have a pretty noticeable effect, but if you are just testing the waters or know that you are highly sensitive to edibles you can always start with a quarter or a half. They are large enough to be cut into smaller pieces so that you can work your way up to a dose that’s right for you. So where should you start?

2.5 mg of CBD and 2.5mg THC (5 mg total) – ¼ of a gummy

Great for first timers or those that prefer a microdose – can be energizing, reducing pain and anxiety a bit but not overwhelming

5 mg of CBD and 5 mg of THC (10 mg total)- ½ of a gummy

Recommended for those more familiar with cannabis or with more persistent symptoms. This dose can produce a euphoric sensation and possibly a buzzed feeling

10 mg of CBD and 10 mg of THC (20 mg total)- 1 gummy

This would be a good dose for those familiar with cannabis, a high tolerance , seeking a more intense experience or requiring serious relief from restlessness or pain. This dose could be overwhelming for someone new to cannabis or edibles

*With edibles, always remember to wait 2-4 hours after consumption to feel the full effect and expect it to have a more intense effect than smokable flower. Please remember to not drive or operate heavy machinery on any of these doses.

Another frequently asked question we get is, will the CBD ‘cancel out’ the effects of the THC? The answer is no, there is a synergistic effect of combining cannabinoids, known as the entourage effect. CBD enhances the anti-inflammatory, pain reducing and relaxing properties of THC and reduces the negative side effects of THC such as paranoia and anxiety. There’s a reason they grow together in the plant! If you have never tried an equal ratio product before, you will be pleasantly surprised by the way CBD compliments THC. Combining the two produces a very balanced but noticeably euphoric experience.

So thanks to the diligent math of some very determined stoners, the farm bill and the cannabis plant, we all have more access than ever to federally legal, good quality, lab tested hemp products. Although we are not a medical dispensary, we offer both CBD and THC products that are recognized for improving sleep, mood, reducing stress and even helping those who suffer with chronic pain. We combined the best of both worlds in our newest gummies to bring you the finest the cannabis plant has to offer, while remaining federally compliant. Remember to always consult your physician prior to any starting any new cannabis regime. Whether you’re beginning to explore cannabis or you’re looking to relive the bliss of your last trip to Vegas, our new equal ratio THC:CBD gummies may be exactly what you’re seeking.
